Description

When exposed to moisture in the air, the blue colour of dry cobalt chloride paper will change from blue to pink. So cobalt chloride paper is used for detecting the humidity in air. When dipped into water, cobalt (II) chloride (CoCl2) test paper changes its colour from blue (anhydrous CoCl2) to purple (dihydrate CoCl2 2H2O) to pink (hexahydrate CoCl2 6H2O).

Cobalt chloride paper is used to demonstrate the process of botanical transpiration through the stomata on the underside of leaves. The dry blue coloured cobalt chloride paper turns pink in the presence of water. So during transpiration when water evaporates from the stomata of plant leaves, the blue cobalt chloride paper turns pink.

NOTE: Given the ubiquitous nature of water, Cobalt Chloride test papers will be pink when they first arrive to the user. To prepare them for use, it is best to store them in a desiccator (49DGV150), or they can be dried out in a warm oven at about 50degC and then used.

Minimum shelf life of 3 years; much longer if kept desiccated. Changes color instantly in liquid H2O; reacts to 55% RH or higher. Color reverts from pinkish white to blue in warm, dry environments.
