Bromine Water 2% – DIY Instructions
(No longer sold as a prepared item. Use this method if required.)

Equipment & Reagents

  • 1 × Amber Glass Bottle, 1L [1000SU-1L]
  • Sodium Bromide, 28 g [46208-100g]
  • Sodium Chlorite, 22 g [46608-100g]
  • Hydrochloric Acid 4.9%, 180 g [27238-P-1L]
  • Deionised (DI) water
  • Balance, fume hood, PPE

Safety Precautions

  • Perform all steps in a fume hood – bromine vapours are toxic.
  • Wear lab coat, gloves, and safety glasses.
  • Label final solution: “Bromine Water 2% – Toxic / Corrosive”.

Method

  1. Place the clean 1L amber glass bottle on a balance and record its tare weight (empty weight). The final solution must be made up to tare weight + 1000 g.

  2. Add 28 g sodium bromide [46208-100g] into the bottle. Rinse in any remaining solid with DI water.

  3. Add 22 g sodium chlorite [46608-100g], rinsing in with DI water.

  4. Add DI water to bring the liquid level to approximately 500 mL. Swirl gently until dissolved.

  5. Carefully add 180 g of 4.9% hydrochloric acid [27238-P-1L]. Bromine will begin forming at this stage.

  6. Quickly make the solution up to the final required mass (tare + 1000 g) with DI water.

  7. Cap the bottle securely and invert to mix.

Notes

  • The method yields approximately 500 mL of 2% bromine water.
  • Store in a cool, dark place in the amber bottle with the lid tightly sealed.
  • Dispose of unused solution according to hazardous waste protocols.
