Graphite Crystal Structure Molecular Model – 39 Atoms
Graphite Crystal Structure Molecular Model – 39 Atoms
SKU:51GCS
Graphite crystal structure molecular model for demonstrating the layered, planar arrangement of carbon atoms in graphite. The model helps students visualise the hexagonal carbon networks, the offset stacking of graphite layers and the different interactions within and between the layers.
Within each layer, carbon atoms are arranged in a honeycomb lattice and held together by strong covalent bonds. The layers are stacked in an offset A–B–A arrangement. Weaker van der Waals forces act between the layers, allowing them to slide past one another and helping explain graphite's characteristic lubricating properties.
What's Included
- 39 black carbon atom parts – 23 mm diameter – 5 holes at 120°/90°
- 47 medium grey/white bonds – 27 mm length
- 14 long grey/white bonds – 44 mm length
