Ruhmkorff Induction Coil – High Voltage Physics Demonstrator

The Ruhmkorff Induction Coil is a high-voltage physics demonstrator that converts a low-voltage DC supply into high-voltage electrical pulses through electromagnetic induction. It is suitable for supervised demonstrations of spark discharge and, when used with compatible apparatus, gas discharge tubes, spectrum tubes and cathode ray tubes.

A soft iron core, primary and secondary windings, mechanical interrupter and capacitor work together to produce the changing magnetic field needed for induction. The adjustable electrodes allow students to observe electrical discharge and investigate how an induction coil operates. Replacement brass electrode points and point holders are available separately.

Safety and Operation

High-voltage apparatus for use only by trained personnel under appropriate supervision. Do not touch exposed terminals, electrodes or conductors while energised. Do not stare directly at the spark gap, and keep the apparatus away from pacemakers and sensitive electronic equipment. The manufacturer's manual specifies a maximum discharge gap of 80mm and advises against prolonged continuous operation to prevent overheating. Disconnect the power source before adjusting or servicing the apparatus. Follow the rating plate and manufacturer's instructions for the actual unit supplied.
