A hands-on science fair project kit that explores how microorganisms grow on everyday surfaces and how hygiene practices can reduce their spread.

What students do:
Collect samples from common surfaces using sterile swabs and observe how microorganisms grow on nutrient agar plates over time.

What this investigates:
How microorganisms are present in everyday environments and how hygiene practices such as handwashing can reduce microbial growth.

Variables to explore:

• Compare bacterial growth on clean vs unwashed hands
• Test different surfaces such as desks, phones, or door handles
• Observe how washing hands affects microorganism growth

What’s Included in This Kit

1 x Nutrient Agar Plates (Pack of 20, 90mm, sterile)
4 x Sterile Swab Packs
1m Parafilm (for sealing plates safely)
1 x Plastic Forceps
1 x Safety Glasses

What you can use from home:

• Soap and water (for hygiene comparison)
• Common surfaces (e.g. hands, desks, phones)
• A warm location (room temperature area for observation)

Important safety information:
Agar plates should be sealed using parafilm after inoculation. Do not open plates once microorganisms begin to grow. Dispose of used plates safely according to school guidelines.

All equipment included is suitable for standard school science fair projects and classroom use.
