Lenz's Law Demonstrator – Eddy Current Experiment Kit
Lenz's Law Demonstrator – Eddy Current Experiment Kit
SKU:42LLD
The Lenz's Law Demonstrator provides a visual way to investigate electromagnetic induction and eddy current braking. Compare the fall of a non-magnetic mass with a mass containing a neodymium magnet through an aluminium tube. The magnetic mass travels much more slowly, demonstrating how induced currents produce a magnetic field that opposes the change that created them.
This experiment allows students to observe Lenz's law directly and explore the relationship between moving magnets, conductors and induced magnetic fields. The apparatus can also be suspended from a suitable spring balance to investigate the forces acting during the magnet's descent.
Key Features
- Demonstrates Lenz's law and eddy current braking
- Compare magnetic and non-magnetic falling masses
- 1500mm aluminium demonstration tube
- Suitable for repeatable classroom observations and discussion
- Supports investigations of electromagnetic induction and magnetic forces
Kit Contents
- 1 × aluminium tube, 1500mm long
- 1 × mounting arm with hook-and-loop attachment pad
- 1 × non-magnetic falling mass
- 1 × falling mass containing a neodymium magnet
Additional Equipment Required
A spring balance is required for the force-measurement activity and is not included with the kit.
Educational Applications
Ideal for demonstrations of Lenz's law, Faraday's law of induction, eddy currents and magnetic braking. Students can compare the motion of the two masses and discuss how the induced magnetic field opposes the falling magnet's movement.
