Singing Rod Set of 3 – Sound & Resonance Demonstration
Singing Rod Set of 3 – Sound & Resonance Demonstration
SKU:46SR
Explore sound, vibration and resonance with this set of three singing rods. When a rod is held at a suitable point and stroked lengthwise with rosin-coated fingers, friction excites vibrations in the metal and produces a sustained, high-pitched tone. Comparing the three rod lengths provides an engaging classroom investigation into frequency and standing waves.
Key Features
- Set of three metal singing rods in different lengths
- Demonstrates how mechanical vibrations produce sound
- Compare pitch and frequency between rods of different lengths
- Investigate the effects of holding position on resonance
- Useful for classroom discussions of longitudinal waves, nodes and antinodes
- Suitable for use alongside Kundt's apparatus in sound investigations
Specifications and Contents
- Rod lengths: 600 mm, 800 mm and 1000 mm
- Supplied: Three singing rods, rosin and instructions
Classroom Activity
Hold one rod securely near its centre and apply a little rosin to your fingers. Stroke the rod lengthwise, adjusting finger pressure until a sustained tone is heard. Repeat with the other rod lengths and compare the pitch. Investigate how changing the holding position affects the sound. Teacher supervision is recommended; avoid producing prolonged loud tones close to the ears.
